I am absolutely delighted to announce the arrival of the fourth member of our family, our son Elliot who was born on April Fool's Day!
Well what can I say... my last post - the third trimester was on my due date 31/03/2016 and in that post I was contemplating and hoping to avoid any intervention to bring on labour - stretch and sweep or being induced if I went overdue.
I was a little upset that I had reached my due date as my first son was born a day before his due date and there is some evidence that subsequent babies arrive earlier, not in my case.
In the run up to the due date I bounced on my gym/ birthing ball (helping get baby in the right position, not to mention it is a comfortable way to sit). I drank raspberry leaf tea (apparently helps make labour contractions more efficient.. )
I also listened to YouTube Hypnobirthing music and affirmations. I found a great talk that relaxed me and was full of positive suggestions that made me feel confident that going into labour wasn't something to fear and be anxious about. I was really calm the first time round and even though I did end up having an emergency c-section it was a calm and positive experience. I felt far more anxious this time round so went back to the Hypnobirthing as I found it really helped previously and it did really help this time round too to keep me calm, my mind clear and focused on giving birth.
That evening my husband made me a Thai green curry and to go with it he bought some Thai crackers - oh my god, they were so spicy they nearly blew my head off!! My eyes were streaming, I was choking and my throat was on fire!
Now I am not saying that it brought on labour (they say eating a hot curry can bring on labour) as we will never know but..... in the early hours of the morning my waters broke!!
Labour and Birth
In my previous birth I had had to have an emergency c- section due to my son becoming distressed at the pushing stage. This time round after much deliberating and a few meetings with a VBAC nurse and my Consultant I opted to try for a VBAC - Vaginal Birth After C-Section.
At 2.20am I woke up to the sensation of my waters breaking, this was a new experience for me as in my previous pregnancy my waters were broken in hospital. I pottered around and got the last few bits for my hospital bag. At 3am I woke up my husband with the exciting news, I then called the Labour Ward. As I was not having contractions I was told to go back to sleep and call back at 6am to be reassessed. Well very soon I started getting very uncomfortable with contractions starting and I couldn't sleep. I called back and was told to come in. At 6am I arrived at the hospital and shown to my room where I was taken to be monitored and assessed to see if I was indeed in labour.
I could see the baby's heartbeat and my vital stats too and I could see each time I was having a contraction, as well as obviously feeling them!
At 7am following an internal examination it was confirmed that I was indeed in labour at 4cm - the contractions were coming thick and fast at every 2 minutes...and I was transferred into my Labour room and greeted by the midwife who was going to be with me throughout my labour. The pain was intense and almost unrelenting, finally I was allowed to have Gas and Air!
Very soon (or so it felt) I was feeling the need to push, I was now 9cm gone. Amazing.
It wasn't easy, I am sure a few times I asked to be knocked out so they could just get the baby out...
And then baby got distressed and they had to get it out quickly. I was whisked to theatre for an attempted forceps delivery. I had two attempts to push the baby out or I was going to have to have another emergency c-section. I remember thinking 'Oh no not again!' but I just wanted my baby to be delivered safely so I just went with it all (well what else can you do really?)
I was given a spinal and all pain disappeared in an instant, the need to push was gone. One of my theatre team told me when to push (very strange when you literally cannot feel a thing!) and luckily the baby was delivered without the need for a c-section. I got my VBAC afterall!
At 10.20am the baby made an appearance.
It was a baby boy! We had wondered if we were expecting a girl this time round (we wanted a surprise so did not ask at the scan) but we were overwhelmed with love and relief for the safe birth of this gorgeous, tiny baby boy before us.
I was taken to the recovery room, enjoyed skin to skin and a first feed with our new son and then was given the utterly welcome tea and toast that you are promised as a mother who has just undergone labour! It tasted every bit as good as I imagined it would.
Despite being really well prepared this time round for labour with snacks and bottles of water, I didn't actually get to open any of it. Things happened so fast, there wasn't really an opportunity to eat although I did manage to have sips of water.
I stayed in hospital for 2 nights. I had to wait for the sensation to come back to my legs, go to the toilet with no problems and get assistance with trying to breastfeed. They also do newborn checks and ensure that there are no complications with the mother. So on Sunday we had this tiny, helpless newborn to take home and look after!
Breastfeeding and how we are doing one month in...
I found breastfeeding extremely hard last time round. My son was fairly small, I had had a c-section as well which meant trying to get comfortable was hard. I persevered mainly because I am stubborn and I remember that things did get easier as the weeks went on. I fed him for over 11 months.
I wanted to give it a go again this time round as I just felt a different baby could mean that things would be easier this time round. I also didn't have a c-section to contend with so was in a great frame of mind.
Well I can tell you it hasn't been a walk in the park. Elliot was born even smaller than my first son. We both struggled to get the hold and the perfect latch right. Despite getting help when in hospital and it all making sense, no soon as the helper had left we were back to square one. He was a hungry little baby and got so frustrated as did I.
It hurt like hell, a horrendous searing pain that made me want to swear, he also had a super strong clamping mechanism. I was super sore all the time and upset that it was so hard once again. There were many tears and a huge struggle to keep going.
When I got home, I read all the leaflets given to me, I got advice from the Midwives, I got advice from the Health Visitor. I watched endless youtube videos and we stumbled along in the hope that it would all click into place when he gets bigger and his latch gets wider. Meanwhile I slapped on the Lansinoh cream (a must buy if you are breastfeeding) to soothe and protect after feeds.
However, we must have been doing something right as by 2 weeks old he had gained 9 1/2 ounces! A great gain for a breastfed baby that mummy had no idea whether he was doing well or not!!!
He is now four weeks old - I wouldn't say we have completely cracked breastfeeding but we are almost there which makes me feel good. E is getting bigger, his latch is getting wider. Feeds are (almost) everytime pain free and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. He is still feeding for 20-30 minutes every 2 to 3 hours but this can increase in the evening when he seems super hungry and cluster feeds for what feels like the entire evening. Oh and growth spurts - same again - super hungry baby who is constantly nursing, less sleep and general fussiness..
One last thing... I thought I was totally prepared for the lack of sleep because I barely slept at night in pregnancy. Well NOTHING prepares you for the lack of sleep with a newborn. At least when I wasn't sleeping in pregnancy I could just lie down and try and relax. When you have a newborn you have a little life that is completely dependent on you, it may need feeding, changing or just a cuddle and it cries...a lot. You cannot relax and you certainly cannot sleep no matter how tired you are...
Exhausted, delirious, happy, frustrated , utterly thrilling. I wouldn't change it for the world!

The Third Trimester - Weeks 28-40 - Part 2
Weeks 28 -33 were pretty much unremarkable and similar to the latter stages of the first half of the Third Trimester.
My iron levels were found to be low after the 28 week blood test and I was taking Floradix but I found it was making me feel ill rather than energising me. I have since switched to taking SpaTone and what a difference it has made to how I feel and boosting my energy levels. I highly recommend it.
The baby bump is bigger and far more noticeable and so it should be as I am almost there!
I am trying to keep active by walking as much as I can but since week 33 the SPD pain has ramped up a bit and baby is still loving sitting/pushing against my bladder..
Since 35 weeks I have been experiencing really heavy legs without any swelling (I keep checking!). This has made walking quite an effort as it feels like I am dragging lead weights around. The baby is also very active but does like to wedge itself into painful positions, nothing really new there!
36 weeks - all the above still applies... My lovely school mum friends surprised me with cake and gifts - isn't the cake above just the cutest?! It tasted incredibly good too.
37 weeks - So baby is now deemed to be term and no longer premature, baby can come any day now!!
I have been measured for nursing bras, both baby and my hospital bags are ready - we just need to build the crib and we are ready for baby's arrival :)
38 weeks - Bump seems huge now! I really feel quite heavy.
I have also acquired puffy feet (oh the glamour!) Weighted legs are still a feature and walking any distance is incredibly uncomfortable.
There isn't much room in there now and the baby's movements are even stronger if that is even possible... I feel it stretching from my ribs right down to my bladder area. I have even had the baby push out something that feels quite bony out of my rib area, to the family's amusement.
At times it lays in a position that sends shooting pains down my legs and this can last for a good 15 minutes where I think that my hips are going to disengage from my legs, scary I can tell you.
The baby's room is painted, the drawers are in place and the crib is built... we are almost there!!
39 weeks - I am not going to lie, this week has been a struggle - the pressure building down below is quite something. The nightly toilet breaks are getting to be harder too, getting out of bed comfortably and walking is so painful. The pain sometimes just to turn over in bed has me biting my pillow, and this pain can go on for up to half an hour until baby decides to move...
A few days ago I felt regular pains and pressure and we all got excited to think it could be contractions but alas it wasn't labour - this has happened a fair few times now but it goes away after about an hour. It can happen a few times a day.
Bump seems lower now too, are things imminent?
Emotions - I have had a few crying spells, full on sobbing fests. Apparently this is completely normal as your hormones prepare for labour and is caused by a drop in progesterone.
40 weeks - Today is my due date with no sign of baby making an appearance... I guess I will be having an April baby afterall!!

The Third Trimester - Weeks 28-40 - Part 1
Weeks 28-40 - The Third Trimester
Weeks 28- 32
I am now feeling strong baby movements that are at times really quite painful! My first child was a booter and kicker, this baby seems to be doing acrobatics and rolling around in my tummy and pushing itself into my ribs and hips! However it is fun to watch the baby moving around and my stomach changing shape as it does so :)
Pretty sure I am also getting Braxton Hicks (didn't get these in the first pregnancy, or if I did I have them I didn't notice)
What are Braxton Hicks?
When you have a contraction, your womb (uterus) tightens and then relaxes, like a stronger version of period pains. You may have had contractions throughout your pregnancy, particularly towards the end. During pregnancy, these painless tightenings are called Braxton Hicks contractions.
How Braxton Hicks contractions differ from labour...
I still feel like gagging when brushing and flossing my teeth so I have to do all I can to avoid actually being sick (at times it has been close!)
Heartburn is ever present particularly at night.
Toilet visits are far more frequent now too - both day and night.
My sleep is quite often disturbed either from waking up needing the toilet or just being too uncomfortable to sleep and so I have taken to using Vichy Idealia Skin Sleep to help moisturise my face and to fake a good night's sleep, it give me a cheats glow in the morning! It smells so nice and does the job so I am happy!
Iron levels are low so I am taking Floradix as a supplement.
My baby bump is visible and my clothes are feeling tighter (I have just gone up a dress size) but I am still getting comments like I don't seem very big for how far gone in pregnancy I am... This can be quite hurtful to be honest.
Part two to follow....

How Braxton Hicks contractions differ from labour...
- Are infrequent, and usually happen no more than once or twice an hour, a few times a day.
- Often stop if you change activity. So walk about if you've been sitting, and sit down if you've been on your feet for a while.
- Are usually irregular, or if they are regular, only stay that way for a short spell.
- Don't last long, usually less than a minute.
- Continue to be unpredictable and non-rhythmic.
- Don't increase in intensity.

Pregnancy - What Is The Second Trimester Like?
I had a phenomenal response to my post on Pregnancy - The First Trimester that I thought I would continue the series with updates on the second and third trimesters.
What follows below is my experience.
The Second Trimester - Weeks 12 - 27
Weeks - 12 -15 - Still being sick, still no energy.
Week 13 - I am sure I can feel baby movements.....like whooshes across my stomach.
Weeks 16 and ongoing - feeling sick but not being sick! - hurrah!! - Heartburn.... gaviscon is my friend.... very good friend.
Week 17 - I had a midwife appt and got to hear the baby's heartbeat :)
Had a funny turn - flashing coloured zigzags in my eyes, tingling down my left side of my face and arm/hands. then a really bad headache ....
got checked out at the dr's who recommended a hospital visit for an ECG and following that an MRI brain scan to rule out anything more sinister.
I also got to see my hospital notes and I DID have HG in my first pregnancy too - I already felt I knew but it was interesting to see it confirmed and actually written down in black and white.
Week 18 - The odd headache, difficulty sleeping & restless legs
Week 19 - Finally the nausea has gone and no sickness. Feeling proper big kicks now! Love this feeling.
Week 20 - The Anomaly Scan - Baby was being very naughty and lying in the wrong position for the sonographer to take all the measurements that were needed. It took us 2 hours, sugary food, lots of walking and 4 attempts inside the scan room but we got there in the end!
Weeks 21- 27 - Symptoms -
Tiredness (particularly as I can't seem to sleep much at night)
Restless legs
Pain in my lower regions (I have a feeling this is SPD ) although it is not so severe yet and comes and goes.
Backache
Pain when the baby wedges itself in particular positions, particularly near the hips..
Baby loves to kick my bladder!
I have started to gag when brushing my teeth again...
Heartburn which is worse in the evenings..my god the burning drives me to distraction
Lower leg cramps
On the plus side -
Lots of lovely kicks and shoves from within by the baby that my husband and seven year old son have felt.
A baby bump!
Buying baby bits which makes it all too real :)
Part three to follow.....

Pregnancy - My First 3 months (1st Trimester)
I've been umming & ahhing whether to post this or not as believe it or not I am a pretty private person in general, but hey, what the heck. Why not? Caring is sharing right?
I am 38, I already have a 7 year old boy and at the end of July I took a pregnancy test which came back positive. To be honest I knew I was pregnant before I even took the test as I had some little indicators in the weeks before ...
Pregnancy symptoms
In my first pregnancy I experienced implantation bleeding which this time round I didn't have which made me think that I wasn't pregnant.
This time however I was feeling stretching, odd pains and cramps like my period was due any time soon...but of course it never materialised on the day I was due.
I needed the toilet more than usual, waking frequently in the night.
I was waking up in sweats.
I was on holiday and prior to this I had undertaken a healthy eating and exercise programme so I was a bit disappointed to find that my tummy still looked a bit full and rounded. This was absolutely not due to the fact it was an all inclusive resort and I was eating loads, oh no!
On my return from the holiday, unbeknown to me, I was actually 5 weeks pregnant. I had an odd feeling on the plane home, my back hurt & I was overheating. I HAD to get off the plane as soon as I could.
We had an early morning flight and arrived home around 5am - last year when we did this I stayed awake and carried on as usual. This year I went to bed and stayed there for most of the day!
I felt a bit nauseous.
Scents were getting up my nose, my husband wanted to buy an aftershave at Duty Free - things I had previously liked smelt horrid! Oops!
2 days after our return, I was a week late so I got a pregnancy test to confirm my thoughts...
The Test
I really wanted one of those Clearblue pregnancy tests that says 'pregnant' but all my husband could find in the supermarket was the tests that have the lines, no matter though... the result was unmistakeable - I was pregnant!
Hooray!!
What happened after ?
August
Again, I am going to be completely honest, it hasn't been a walk in the park.
Now I think my experience is not too common but I think people should be aware that it can happen to you.
Of course you can be one of the lucky ones who have no symptoms, or you may have a bit of mild morning sickness or nausea but be otherwise able to function pretty much as you were before.
My story is a bit more severe and left me debilitated for weeks. It seemed I was about to embark on a journey of "hyperemesis gravidarum" - the same condition that the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton suffered from and meant she had to announce her pregnancy far earlier than she probably wanted to.
Within a day or so the hormones really kicked in. I was extremely nauseous and could barely stand up. This then progressed to being sick too many times a day to keep count. I lost interest in food as anything I managed to consume would come right back up, water didn't stay down either.
I tried all the usual things that they recommend for nausea in pregnancy -
Eat little and often
Ginger Biscuits - they make me feel sick!
Nibble on crackers
Suck boiled sweets
but my feelings were off the scale and NOTHING worked. I knew it was so much more than just the odd bit of morning sickness.
In desperation I visited my Doctor.
Now I really, really didn't want to take anything early on in the pregnancy but frankly I had little choice. I was extremely poorly and not functioning as a human being. My jaw hurt from being sick, my throat hurt from the force of the vomit and I spent most of the day in bed. My throat was irritated so much I would see blood in the sick bowl and was left extremely sore. My stomach would literally be throwing food out and the retching was unbearable.
I was given some anti sickness tablets. They didn't stop me being sick altogether but reduced the frequency (down from every half an hour to 5 or 6 times a day) and I could at least keep a bit of water down.
On top of this I was told I also had a urine infection (common in pregnancy) and had to take two sets of antibiotics.
Headaches - The headaches due to dehydration were horrendous.
DO NOT MENTION SCENTS and FRAGRANCES - every scent made me feel ten times worse... I hated my husband's shower gel, aftershave, our handwash.. food, dinner cooking. Anything really! It was all too much.
It was the Summer holidays and my poor boy was missing his usual happy mummy. Luckily I had family who could help and look after him as I was in no state to.
I narrowly avoided being taken into hospital and put on a drip for dehydration. I felt like I couldn't go..
You see at the end of August my one and only little sister was getting married and I didn't want to miss it for the world, call me crazy but I was not going to miss it.
I still don't know how I got through the fabulous day having spent 4 weeks in bed! But I did and it was an amazing day.
I popped on my fancy frock (I was Maid Of Honour), applied Estee Lauder Double Wear & lots of makeup. I tried to fool people into thinking I was just fine but inside I wanted to just go back to my bed. I was feeling incredibly sick and was sick on the day - especially just before bed that night (the hotel's neighbouring room must have thought I had got very, very drunk!!)
HG is a lonely illness, it can leave you feeling isolated and affects you mentally as well as physically.
September - Back to School
I am trying to get some normality back into my life and I am actually seeing people again.
I do the school run - sick before I go, sick when I get back..All day nausea and sick most evenings.
September has also included my 12 week scan - the one where I came clean and finally confessed to friends & family that I am indeed expecting.
My husband came with me to the scan, we marvelled at this little person inside my tummy. Wriggling around and jumping about, I know! All 6.5cm of it!! Baby at first didn't want to play ball... it was standing on his head when we arrived at the hospital but a walk later and plenty of water to drink and it was in the right position for measuring.
Where am I now?
As I am writing I am 15 weeks tomorrow - still feeling nauseous, still being sick but nowhere near as bad as I was and still exhausted. Yesterday I had my first cup of tea since mid of July.
I am eating food far better now, especially lovely, healthy fruit & veg that I loved so much before pregnancy... Onwards & Upwards.
Part two will follow ...
