The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask Review

The Body Shop says

Refine and revive your skin with our Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask. Inspired by Ayurvedic traditions, this 100% vegan tingling clay mask is infused with bamboo charcoal, green tea leaves and organic tea tree oil. And it’s been formulated without parabens, paraffin, silicone or mineral oil. This invigorating charcoal face mask draws out impurities and refines the appearance of pores for healthy-looking skin with a glow that shows.

  • 100% vegan
  • Tingling charcoal clay mask
  • Absorbs excess oil
  • For skin that needs extra purification to reveal a healthy, youthful glow
  • Formulated without parabens, paraffin, silicone or mineral oil
  • Ideal to create a facial at home
  • Packed with bamboo charcoal from the Himalayan Foothills, green tea leaves from Japan and organic Community Trade tea tree oil from Kenya

My thoughts

The mask sample was in a copy of Stylist Magazine. I don't remember whether the information accompanying the mask mentioned that it was tingling and to be honest I might have been a reluctant to try it. It's a good job I did though, as happily I didn't experience any tingling from my mask.

This mask is exquisite. It really works a treat and does what it claims. Its scent is gorgeously zesty and fresh. If you have smelt any green tea fragrances that is what it resembles. The mask is smooth with some bitty strips. It dries quickly, drawing out impurities and softening the skin. As you wash it off the bitty strips become an exfoliator, really cleansing and smoothing the skin. The result is glowing, bright skin and super cleaned out pores. Skin feels wonderful and beautifully soft to touch. A winning mask that I would head out and purchase.

Love it.

The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask costs £15 for 75ml

Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Daily Calming Facial Lotion & Gentle Facial Exfoliating Scrub - Review

I won these beauty skincare minis (I am not sure if these are sold in the shops but they would be perfect as travel miniatures) on twitter.

Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Daily Calming Facial Lotion

Palmers say

A light, fast-absorbing lotion specifically designed for sensitive skin prone to irritations.

A special blend of natural ingredients such as Chamomile and Aloe Vera helps reduce the appearance of redness, calms and soothes sensitive skin while leaving it lightly hydrated without a greasy feel. With continued use skin feels fresh, calm and healthy.

Contains Patented MLE (Multi Lamellar Emulsion) Technology: This special emulsion of plant derived ingredients mimics the structure of skin's own natural moisture. MLE helps in the restoration of the skins' protective barrier, which prevents skin from further drying due to environmental factors.

My thoughts

This facial moisturiser had a faint scent of cocoa butter and a soft, silky texture. It left my skin feeling comfortable, silky soft and not at all greasy. I really did feel like it was helping reduce redness in my cheeks/face and was perfect for my post holiday skin.

Would I consider buying it? Yes I would.

Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Gentle Exfoliating Scrub

Palmers say

Micro-fine crushed Cocoa Beans polish skin, removing dead skin cells and revealing the new smoother skin beneath. This daily facial scrub will enhance the skin's surface allowing it to better absorb the Daily Calming Facial Lotion and Night Renewal Cream.

Gentle enough to be used 2-3 times a week.

My thoughts

The scrub had a pleasant cocoa, chocolatey scent. The crushed cocoa beans made a good gentle polish for the skin. I did feel like I got smoother, softer skin using the scrub and it didn't irritate my skin but there was nothing in particular that made it stand out over and above other scrubs on the market.

I would be unlikely to purchase this product as I have other scrubs that I prefer.

Witch Blackhead Clearing Gel Review

Sometimes the products that get me most excited are the unassuming ones, the ones I try that make a real difference to my skin and new Witch Blackhead Clearing Gel is, my dear readers, one such product.

Witch say

Witch Blackhead Clearing Gel is a gentle exfoliating gel that removes dead skin cells and rubs away blackheads easily whilst contracting the pores. Making your skin look fresher and more radiant for the whole day.

Oil free
Dermatologically tested

To use -

Use the gel on your DRY face with your DRY fingers. Apply an adequate amount on your T-zone and cheeks. Massage the formula for about one minute (avoiding the eye area) until dead skin cells are coming off. Rinse off the remains with water.

Ingredients

Blackhead Clearing Gel is formulated with the following key ingredients:

Witch Hazel Extract – natural astringent with toning and clearing properties.
Quaternary Ammonium Salts to gently exfoliate & remove dead skin cells.
Glycerin to provide hydration and leave your skin feeling soft and soothed.

My thoughts

I was looking forward to trying this gel as when I returned from holiday, my pores were enlarged and really quite dirty :( I couldn't wait to cover them up with makeup so this was a perfect opportunity to really put this product to the test.

This gel has a pleasant fresh scent which makes it a pleasure to use. The gel rolls and then you rinse it off. From the first use my skin felt softer and smoother. (I follow with a cleanser) I have been using it for more than 2 weeks now and the pores on my nose are cleaner and a lot smaller looking/barely visible. My skin is looking clearer, feels softer and just generally better looking. The exfoliating action is so gentle and yet so effective.

I have been really impressed with this product, especially as it is under £5 and although this was a pr sample I will be repurchasing.

A big thumbs up from me.

Dermalogica Clear Start Blackhead Clearing Pore Control Scrub Review

Dermalogica's Clear Start range may be aimed at teenagers and the youth market but I had such good results with a product from the previous range - Clean Start and its Ready, Set, Scrub which is rather similar to this skincare product so four years down the line I was willing to give it a go.

Dermalogica say

Deep clean pores and scrub away dull skin for a clearer you! Purifying bentonite clay absorbs excess oil and debris from skin, and helps to control shine. Refreshing botanicals reinvigorate skin. Skin-smoothing scrub helps skin feel cleaner and fresher than before.

My thoughts

I use this after I have cleansed with an oil based wash and I think it is quite simply brilliant. The paste is so smooth with a very fine grit so you know it is removing dull skin but extremely gently. I would call this more of a polish than a scrub but either way it is very effective. The menthol gives it a refreshing and cooling effect on the skin which is rather welcome in this heat.

Results -  My skin is smoother, brighter and clearer since I started using this a week ago. The pores on my nose look far smaller and my foundation sits better too.

10/10 from me

DIY Beauty With The Multi-Tasking STEAMCREAM

STEAMCREAM is well known as a fabulous light and airy moisturiser suitable for use on face, hands and body. It uses ingredients including lavender and oatmeal infusion (now I am not a huge fan of a lavender scent but this is delicate and doesn't linger) It is also known for its tins and their many designs which I personally love!

The team at STEAMCREAM recently contacted me to take part in a Blogger Challenge which would show that not only is STEAMCREAM a great moisturiser but can be used in other ways too. I am not known for making my own beauty products so I was looking forward to giving it a go. STEAMCREAM supplied a DIY Kit consisting of

1 bottle of STEAMCREAM
1 bag of unrefined brown sugar
1 bag of organic jumbo oats
1 empty STEAMCREAM tin

I know what you are thinking... perfect porridge ingredients, right? I was tempted !!

I enlisted the help of my 5 year old son who was very excited to be helping mummy make some make up! We had a great afternoon of fun and most importantly discovered that STEAMCREAM could indeed be made into 3 other wonderful beauty products that really work. Versatile indeed.

Invigorating Sugar Scrub

Mix a few pumps of steam cream into a small amount of sugar and there you have a fast homemade body scrub. I love this, it smells wonderful and is creamy too. This is a really effective sugar scrub, leaving my skin silky soft and smooth.

The sugar helps to naturally remove dead skin cells. The almond oil, Vitamin A & E strengthen and nourish skin whilst the neroli oil with soften dry, hard skin.

BeautySwot Tip - Mix up as you go along with only the amount you need as it soon melts!

Gentle Exfoliating Face Mask

Mix a few pumps of STEAMCREAM with a small amount of bashed up oats (hence the need for a rolling pin, my little boy had great fun with this!) Dampen face, apply mask to skin and leave for 5 minutes. Remove with warm water.

Another really effective use for STEAMCREAM, when I had removed this homemade mask I was left with skin that positively glowed. It was radiant and incredibly soft.

The oatmeal infusion gentle soothes sensitive, irritated skin and brightens skintone. The added oats work to naturally remove dead skin cells.

Homemade BB Cream

I took my favourite full coverage foundation Estee Lauder Double Wear SPF10 and mixed it with STEAMCREAM (one part STEAMCREAM to two parts foundation) to make a lighter, more dewier finish foundation with skincare benefits (BB Cream!) This worked really well. Coverage was good, my skin felt good and it lasted.

Simple, easy and effective uses for STEAMCREAM. I have to say I really enjoyed this challenge.

STEAMCREAM costs 12.95 and is available from www.steamcream.co.uk , Selfridges, John Lewis and ASOS.com

Sampar Paris Skincare Products Review - Essentials & Cosmakeup

A fair few weeks ago I was sent three products from Sampar Paris to review, I hadn't heard of this brand before it dropped through my letterbox so I was intrigued to find out more and test them out.

About Sampar Paris

Sampar: Smart Skin in the City

SAMPAR claim to be the pioneer of urban skincare. The SAMPAR mission is to reset the skin's intelligent response system and to support its natural healing actions. All Sampar products are enriched with the exclusive Urban Advance Complex. The innovative formulations act at the heart of cells to "wake up" and reactivate the skin's vital functions, helping to recover a state of equilibrium.  Not only does the Sampar philosophy believe in high quality formulations, importance is also placed on the sleek innovative packaging. Airless packs are used to guarantee efficiency of formulas without risk of contamination. It also means that you will be able to use the 100% of the product.

From the Essentials collection

So Much to Dew Midnight Mask 50ml, £34

Sampar say

Overnight hydrating and replenishing mask. Day after day, restores ideal moisture levels and improves skin hydration, starting from the first application. Provides comfortable, supple and toned skin 24/7. Contains a Smart Hydrating Complex and Hyaluronic Acid Capsules. Suitable for all skint types.

My thoughts

This moisturising mask has a gorgeous fresh scent, a beautifully light texture and is very comfortable to wear overnight. It feels really hydrating and refreshing, skin looks plumped in the morning. I like this a lot as an overnight treatment.

To use - apply after cleansing, which you do by twisting the lid so that the product comes through the brush, and rinse off in the morning.

Equalizing Foam Peel 50ml, £48

Sampar say

A granule free exfoliator. A uniquely formulated peel with no grains and no colourants suitable for all skin types. It gently and efficiently exfoliates, freeing the skin of deeply rooted pollutants and toxins for replenished skin and a complexion in just 2 minutes. Contains Probiotic Enzymes and a blend of essential oils including Lavender, Sage, Thyme, Rosemary and Geranium.

My thoughts

Texture wise this is really runny, scent wise it is herby and slightly medicinal. This is a real hero product. Readers of will BeautySwot know that I am a huge fan of products that are time saving and work in a short time frame. I absolutely love that in 2 minutes the look of my skin improves. Brighter, softer, smoother skin in just 2 minutes. Brilliant.

To use - Apply twice a week to lightly moistened face, avoiding the eye contour. Leave on for 2 minutes. Add water and rub into skin with fingertips. Rinse thoroughly.

Cosmakeup - blurring the lines between skincare and make-up

Glamour Shot 30ml, £34

Sampar say

Minimises wrinkles & imperfections in 1 min. A universal transparent foundation suitable for every skin type and colour that has both instant and long term effects. HQA microlens technology erases imperfections and illuminates the skin, instantly evening out the complexion, masking redness and and minimising fine lines and wrinkles. It smoothes and mattifies whilst reducing enlarged pores. Contains Oat Extract and Encapsulated Hyaluronic Acid.

My thoughts

Out of the three products this was the one that I was most excited about trying. Seduced by the product name and its claims of fast action and perfect skin with a transparent foundation. I wasn't overly taken by the smell, texture wise the product was creamy and felt nice to apply. There is no denying the fact that this calms redness down and blurs fine lines and mattifies the skin making it appear smoother, so far so good. However, I am afraid I just couldn't get past the fact that I couldn't apply a foundation over the top. I tried, it clumped. Personally I just felt too naked without the coverage and warmth of a foundation on my skin. I think the place that needs it is the most is my nose area and this wasn't concealed enough by the Glamour Shot product.

All products are available to purchase from Marks & Spencer Your Beauty, www.marksandspencer.com and from www.feelunique.com

GINVERA Green Tea Whitening Marvel Gel - Review

This week I will be sharing my current beauty routine with you and today I am starting with GINVERA Green Tea Whitening Marvel Gel - with the tagline - Zero Blackheads in 1 step.

GINVERA say

Ginvera Green Tea Marvel Gel works by specifically targeting the cornified skin layer, dissolving and removing the dead skin cells on the top most epidermis layer. This gentle yet effective exfoliating action zeros-out blackheads thoroughly and painlessly and helps remove deep layers of dead skin. When the dead skin barrier is removed, the new skin underneath is revealed, allowing your skin’s healthy radiance to glow from within. It helps prevent pimples and controls oil secretion to help you stay shine-free the whole day!

Directions for Use:

Before cleansing, squeeze an adequate amount and apply onto dry face and neck with dry fingers, focusing on the T-zone area in particular. Gently massage in circular motions until you can see small flakes appearing (these are the dead skin cells and dirt from the skin). After massaging, rinse off with water or facial cleanser afterwards.

Claims

1. Rubs away deep layers of dead skin cells
2. Rubs away blackheads painlessly
3. Contracts pores for refined skin
4. Lightens black spots, freckles and scars
5. Removes oil seeds
6. Regulates sebum secretion to prevent pimples
7.Brightens dull complexion
8. Changes dark, rough skin to smooth skin
9. Whitens skin as it gives way to new born skin
10. Enhances quick absorption of skincare products.

My thoughts

I received this gel in a press bag last Summer and having not heard of the brand I must admit I put it to one side. Before buying a facial exfoliator I checked my box of skincare and makeup still to use and came across this, finally giving it a go..

I have to say I am glad I did.

On opening the product I wasn't keen on the scent, it doesn't smell as nice as other green tea products I have tried but strangely I haven't noticed the scent since, the strong smell has disappeared.

This is a gel textured, completely smooth and extremely gentle facial exfoliator. On the outer packaging it says you can use this daily and I have been for the last 2 weeks (If you are exfoliating daily or regularly make sure you use a moisturiser with high SPF)

I have found that it glides on smoothly, as it is rubbed it eventually rolls into balls as you can see in the picture above. Once rinsed off my skin is left feeling so smooth, it clears out the pores brilliantly.  Over time this has really cleared up my skin, it looks and feels smoother and much, much brighter (which has been a challenge with the current weather)

I would recommend this product.

GINVERA Green Tea Whitening Marvel Gel costs £22 for 60ml and is available online or from Harvey Nichols

What's Inside My January 2013 GlossyBox

My GlossyBox was delivered sometime yesterday but as I was out all day I have just opened the box and as January is the traditional month for Detox, yes you guessed it the theme is DETOX.

Billed as the Detox box, it is designed to provide you with all the necessary tools to hide the excesses of the holiday season and the Sleepless New Year's night. The Detox box will help you look and feel your best for a successful start into the New Year.

The Contents

First up a rather sweet GlossyBox sleep mask, this is a bonus product but I have many a need for this!

BM Beauty - Dewy Perfection Finishing Powder 1g (4g is £8)

Claims - A translucent powder with a 100% natural mineral formula. Use on its own to create a dewy finish, under foundation to diminsh fine lines and blemishes, over foundation for an airbrushed finished that keeps your base in place all day. Can also be used as a highlighter on cheeks and brow bones.

I have been using Clinique's Gentle Light Powder Glow (sadly discontinued) lots recently as I love the  flawless finish and staying power it gives me, this sounds very similar so I am looking forward to seeing how this compares.

Eco-BOUTIQUE - Body Lotion With Aloe Leaf and Green Tea 30ml (50ml as part of gift set £8.50)

Description - The delicate scent of mimosa and extracts of organic green tea and aloe leaf create a soothing body lotion to give smooth, hydrated skin.

This smells really nice. The scent is similar to cucumber, very fresh. I like the fact that it is paraben free. I will be using this sample.

MONU - Micro Exfoliant 30ml (100ml is £14.50)

Claims - This poweful dual-action microdermabrasion delivers instant radiant skin, refining the skin's texture, reducing the appearance of pores and fine lines. This instant pick-me-up with papaya enzymes and Shea butter provides an immediate healthy 'new skin' effect. Use 2-3 times a week if you have oily or congested skin. Once a week for acneic, dry or mature skin.

After the huge success of Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant that was in a previous box and which I now love, I am very much looking forward to trying this out and once again making a comparison..

Great tip on the bottle - If exfoliating regularly, use sunscreen to help protect your skin.

Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture for Eyes 3.5ml (15ml is £57)

Claims - Immediate hydration that firms and awakens the delicate eye area.

Quite like the idea of firming and awakening my eye area, will let you know how I find this product!

SANCTUARY SPA - Active Reverse Facial - 30 Day Thermal Transformation (2 sachets, Peptide Transformation Serum 3.5ml and Thermal Rose Clay Mask 7ml) Full Size £27.50

Claims - Reveal smoother, glowing, more youthful skin with our 30 day Thermal Transformation Mask.

Now this is a disappointment..I love the idea of the claims and the product but sadly you don't get a 30 day supply :-( The sachet is just one use but it does promise that you can see instant results of skin looking brighter & tauter, noticeably reducing 'crepey' skin after the first use.

I am going to give this a whirl on Friday, watch out for the Sachet Review on Sunday to find out what I think of it.

My thoughts

No full size product, no make up, no perfume at first glance I was a little underwhelmed...however when I actually took a proper look at the contents and read what they were for, I realised that actually in terms of samples and mix of products this was an excellent box (just a shame that there was not one full size product though!). It is not all that often that I will keep and actually try all of the products but on this occasion, I most definitely will.

What do you think? Was this a good box? What did you receive in your box?

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant - Review

This mini size pot of Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant came in November's GlossyBox. I was quite excited to be trying this as at first glance this seemed to be like a product I used in my mid to late teens from The Body Shop - Japanese Washing Grains.

Dermalogica says

Our number one exfoliant! Gentle, Rice-based exfoliating powder activates upon contact with water, releasing Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead cells, instantly leaving skin smoother and brighter. Formulated without artificial fragrances and colors.

How to use

Dispense about a half-teaspoon of Daily Microfoliant® into very wet hands and create a creamy paste by rubbing hands together. Apply to face in circular motions, avoiding the eye area. Massage gently for one minute, then rinse thoroughly. Follow with toner and moisturiser. Daily use.

My thoughts

I am not going to beat about the bush here, I absolutely love Daily Microfoliant. It is one of the best exfoliators I have ever tried, doing everything it promises to do.

Despite my first thoughts comparing it to the Japanese washing grains of old this is NOTHING like it. The Body Shop product was harsh and scratchy. This feels so gentle against the skin, it is a wonderful powder that turns into a smooth and creamy paste which dissolves as you massage it into the skin. The photos above show this process step by step.

The result is that I am left with incredibly soft, ultra smooth skin that feels fantastic and looks bright. This makes a great addition to my skincare routine.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant costs £38.50 for 75g

Five Facial Washes Speed Reviewed! Clean & Clear,Witch,Neutrogena & Dead Sea Spa Magik

For this post on facial washes I am handing over to my guest reviewer, my good friend Victoria. I am not a huge fan of facial washes and having found myself awash with the items I thought I would pass them on to someone who does use them.

I use facial washes every day as I find they’re not as harsh as soap and water plus they usually have better scents! For reference my skin type is sensitive and can be dry.

Neutrogena Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Daily Scrub £4.49 for 150ml -  With powerful MicroClear technology, exfoliating micro-beads and refreshing pink grapefruit.

I loved the colour of this scrub, I do like products that look good on the bathroom shelf. I really liked the smell of this facial scrub and it gently exfoliated, leaving my skin feeling very fresh afterwards.

Clean & Clear’s Morning Energy Skin Brightening Daily Facial Scrub £3.99 for 150ml -  with bursting beads and lemon & papaya extracts.

Another good colour for my bathroom! This smelt very summery and fruity, a bit like an ice lolly! It felt refreshing on my skin.

Clean & Clear Morning Energy Skin Energising Daily Facial Wash £3.99 for 150ml - with bursting beads and vitamin C & ginseng.

Once again, I liked the bright and cheery colour and it felt invigorating and refreshing with a pleasant kind of zingy smell.

Witch Naturally Clear Gentle Exfoliating Wash £3.99 for 150ml - Contains Witch hazel extract, Rice powder: natural exfoliating particles to deep cleanse pores, Willow bark extract. Product is SLS and SLES free.

The Witch was ok, but didn't have much of a scent; I'm always drawn to strong fruity smells. It lathered quite well and exfoliated gently. Think it was perhaps a little too harsh for my skin though.

I could tell that this was not a favourite for Victoria due to the initial feedback I received. This is designed for combination/oily skin so unsurprisingly was not a good match for her skin type.

Dead Sea Spa Magik Gentle Cleansing Facial Wash £8.80 for 150ml - Suitable for all skin types. Contains a special blend of natural ingredients to penetrate deep seated impurities.

This was my husband’s favourite. He was really impressed with how it got rid of the oiliness of his skin. I found it quite invigorating, but didn’t like the smell too much. I did like the creamy texture though.

As for my favourite, I really couldn’t choose between any of the first three – Neutrogena and the two from Clean & Clear. All of them were fairly similar in scent, texture and how they left my skin feeling. I’d buy all of these facial washes and scrubs again

Thanks so much Victoria for the reviews.. I am wondering have you tried other types of cleansers, in particular cream ones? They may be better if your skin has a tendency to dryness.

Do you have similar skin to Victoria? What cleansers work for you?

Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel

Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel has to be one of the nicest smelling beauty products I have used and as regular reader's of BeautySwot know, scent means a lot to me. I have actually been using the Papaya Enzyme Peel for a couple of years now and I have just realised I have not done a review of it!

The claims -

The natural exfoliating fruit enzyme action of Papaya and Pineapple smooth, brighten and clarify the complexion. This unique, non-granular exfoliating cream contains nourishing Milk Protein, Anti-Oxidant-rich Vitamin E and Marine algae to moisturise, repair and protect the skin. Perfect for complexions which are sensitive or mature.

How to use -

My thoughts -

This is a real pamper treat, I use it probably every 2 weeks. The face peel is creamy and luxurious and is a really gentle exfoliator with no scratchy granules, it is completely smooth. It doesn't harden, I feel a slight tightening on my skin and the product appears to sink into the skin a bit. Rinsing it off leaves me with instantly softer, smoother and clearer looking skin. Whenever my skin needs a little pep, I turn to this delicious peel.

Papaya Enzyme Peel is one of my favourite face masks of of all time. My only disappointment when I used it for the first time was that I wanted to peel it off!

Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel costs £28.60 for 50ml

*This full size tube was part of a gift set which was a PR sample but I have purchased this product before.

Liz Earle Gentle Face Exfoliator

Twice a week as part of my skincare routine I like to use a gentle polish/exfoliator on my face to remove dead skin cells and give my skin a boost of radiance. The Liz Earle Gentle Face Exfoliator is ideal for this purpose and a product that I really enjoy using.

Just like my favourite cleanser Cleanse and Polish, the Gentle Face Exfoliator has the same slightly medicinal Eucalpytus scent that I adore. It also has cocoa butter for softness and features fine jojoba beads for the exfoliation.

Contained in a handy pump action bottle, one pump is all I need. The Gentle Face Exfoliator is designed to be used after cleansing - lightly massage into the skin in circular movements, avoiding the eye area. This is really lovely, it has a nice creamy texture and the beads are so gentle it doesn't feel like it is scratching the skin at all which I have found with some scrubs/exfoliators. The exfoliation process will remove impurities, help clear out blocked pores and flaky skin.

It leaves my skin really soft, smooth and my complexion appearing brighter and clearer.

Creamy!

You can see the tiny Jojoba beads here

I use this twice a week as mentioned before but it can be used as often as needed. It is suitable for all skin types except sensitive.

The ingredients of the Gentle Face Exfoliator

Liz Earle Gentle Face Exfoliator costs £13 for 70ml but it is available in other sizes and tube format.
