Snow Globe - A Christmas Short Story

Snow Globe

Lissy felt a strong tug at her arm as Max dragged her along the street. Max was late and didn't have time for his little girl to be dawdling. It was Saturday morning (Lissy knew this because her teacher had told all the children to have a lovely weekend) and being the last one before Christmas the town was heaving with shoppers. In front of Lissy were a sea of bellies, she looked up to see some smiley faces but many look pained with the strain of Christmas etched onto their faces.  Lissy stole one last glance back before she was carried away through the crowds. Out of the corner of her eye she could still just see the Little Christmas Shop, her favourite shop in town. It had appeared a month ago and no one knew the owner. She had been looking at the pretty and colourful little snow globe that had a twirling pink ballerina in a pink tutu and soldier inside it. She wished for this snow globe more than anything this Christmas. Although one of the smallest gifts in the store, in the window it proudly took centre stage. Lissy wanted to be a ballerina when she grew up, her after school class was the thing she loved to do best. 'Mummy probably would have bought it for me' she thought, then she felt a tear well in her eye. She missed mummy and recently daddy rarely had time for her.

Max felt bad, he hadn't wanted to get Lissy up early this morning but he just had one major project to complete this week before he could relax and enjoy time with Lissy. It was so important he had to make a visit to the office at the weekend, next year he promised himself he would make more time for his wonderful little girl. Dropping her off at the babysitter, Irene, he kissed Lissy on the cheek and vowed to return soon. 'Daddy won't be long, now why don't you play with Oscar and the time will pass quickly.' 'Thanks Irene, I owe you one!' 'No problem Max, take your time.' And with that the door closed behind him and he was gone.

Lissy looked at Oscar, he had a mean look on his face. The kind of look that she understood to mean 'you better not touch any of my toys'. She was glad she had insisted on bringing her rag doll. Not only was it for playing with, it was a great source of comfort when she was alone. Lissy whispered into Daisy's ear. 'Don't worry Daisy, daddy will be back soon. Don't look at Oscar, he is not very nice!' Max grinned as he listened and then went back to playing with his cars. Lissy began telling Daisy all about the snow globe. Irene smiled as she listened, she made a mental note to send Max a text later telling him what the little girl had been saying, she was certain that Max would have been oblivious to it and she didn't want Lissy to be sad on Christmas Day.

In the Little Christmas Shop  Marnie took the musical snow globe out of the window so she could wind it up again. She didn't mind having to do it quite often, truth be told it was one of her favourite items in the shop too. As she placed it back in the window she couldn't help thinking about the pretty little girl who had been entranced with it earlier in the day. She smiled as she also thought of the handsome man that had pulled the little girl away. It had been busy in the shop. with lots of items selling, but no one had yet to buy this sweet festive gift. If it still hadn't sold by Christmas Eve Marnie decided she would have it for herself. From the way the little girl had been gazing at the snow globe, she hoped the man would return to buy it for her. She wondered if there was any way she could get a message to him?

Max was working hard but heard his phone bleep with a text alert, he instantly checked his phone in case something was up with Lissy. It was Irene with the message about the snow globe. He hadn't a clue what she was referring too. Had he been too wrapped up in his thoughts. He would pass by the shop again on the way home, he would take a look then.

That evening, once Lissy had been picked up, they walked back through the town. The Christmas Lights were twinkling and a jolly, portly Santa was handing out sweets. It was so magical to Lissy and this time Max let her take her time. She stopped in front of Santa 'Ho, ho, ho hello there! Now have you written your list to Santa ?' Lissy nodded in awe, unable to speak. She desperately wanted to tell him about the snow globe. Max got his phone out 'Lissy, stand next to Santa, I'll take a picture'
Lissy moved closer and Santa bent down to be the same height - she leaned in and whispered 'A snow globe from the Little Christmas Shop, it's not on my list though' Santa turned to her in surprise, what a sweet child he thought, 'You will get your wish, I promise.' He squeezed her arm, turned to the camera and they both smiled as Max took the photo.

As they passed by the Little Christmas Shop Lissy was disappointed, the shutter was down. She couldn't see inside. At that moment Marnie came out of the door next to the shop. She lived above the shop. She smiled at the little girl and her dad. She really wanted to say something but now was not the time. Max also wanted to say something but suddenly his mouth had become dry, he had never noticed the strikingly attractive woman who worked in the shop. He mumbled some words, Marnie thought she could make out 'Oh you are closed?' She replied in her American accent 'Yes, sorry. I closed a little early. Last ballet practice this evening. I can't be late,. We are open tomorrow, you should pop in'. She hadn't meant to sound abrupt and the conversation played out in her head all the way to the theatre. She sped off as fast as her feet could carry her, she really couldn't be late.

Lissy's eyes lit up, a real life ballerina. She had met a real life ballerina. Max looked down at Lissy 'Never mind Lissy, we will come back tomorrow.'

Except they didn't return the next day, or the next. That night Lissy had come down with a temperature and a mystery illness and had had to go to hospital when she wasn't getting any better. Max was fraught with worry, worrying about his little girl and hating the fact that he still had to work. Between him and Irene they covered visiting times but Lissy wasn't even awake most of the time so she barely knew he was there. He completely forgot about the snow globe and Marnie. Not having to go to Irene's house he bypassed town entirely. He was struggling to concentrate on his work but was forcing himself to focus. Just a few more days.

Marnie was disappointed that she hadn't seen the lovely family again, she had felt sure they would return the next day and when they hadn't she thought they would come back on the Monday. The week passed quickly, by day she was in the shop serving customers picking up last minute things. By night she was dancing to a packed theatre. She didn't stop thinking about the two of them however and was secretly pleased that no one had bought the ballerina snow globe.

On Friday afternoon a phone call interrupted Max's train of thought. He was tired, exhausted. He was just waiting for one last email to action with which he could then close his laptop and put the year behind him. He rubbed his eyes and stretched. 'Max speaking' 'Good news Mr Timpson. There's been a Christmas miracle. Your daughter has woken up, no sign of anything wrong. She wants to see you right , best news however is she has been allowed to go home for Christmas.'

Max perked up instantly and straightened his crumpled worn out body 'What? Really? Oh that is just the most amazing news. I will come just as soon as I can. Tell her her daddy is on her way.'

As soon as the email came through  he sighed with relief. Closing his laptop, he turned off the lights in his office, wished the security guard a Merry Christmas and drove to the hospital.

Sat on the bed, dressed and ready to leave hospital,  Lissy was beaming and Max knew she was better as her eyes glowed with happiness and her cheeks were rosy.

'Daddy!' She put her arms up towards him and gave him a huge, tight hug. 'Daddy?' 'Yes Lissy?' 'Did you buy my snow globe?' Max's stomach sank, his heart lurched and he felt sick. How on earth had he forgotten about the snow globe ? He had to be honest with his little girl. '|No Lissy, I am sorry. I promise you though we shall go out first thing tomorrow and get it' Lissy's lip quivered, her head dropped. Max felt more than awful that he had let his girl down. In quiet tones she replied 'Santa promised me I would get it, but what if someone has bought it already?' 'Well then let's hope they haven't. If they have, I am sure there is bound to be something else in that lovely shop that you would like.' Lissy nodded but deep down in heart she thought 'But that was what I really liked.'

It was Christmas Eve and Marnie came down the stairs of her flat to open the shop up for the last time this year. To her immense surprise there were keen shoppers already waiting for her to open. She felt butterflies and her cheeks redden as she realised it was the man and his little girl. Max felt a warmth in his stomach too as he saw Marnie. As she spoke he realised how much he loved her gorgeous accent.

'Well hello there! I wasn't expecting to see you again!' Lissy looked up at the pretty face 'I've been in hospital. I've come for the snow globe, the ballerina one. Do you still have it?'

Marnie pulled up the shutters and to Lissy's relief it was still there, taking pride of place in the centre of the window display.

Marnie took Lissy's hand 'We do! And I can't think of a nicer little girl to give it a home' Lissy felt Marnie's soft, warm hands wrapped around hers. 'You are a ballerina, I want to be a ballerina when I grow up.'

Marnie had a thought 'Yes I am! Actually I am performing in the Nutcracker this year. We are performing until New Year at Mason's Theatre. Why don't I get you some tickets so you can come watch, would you like that?'

Lissy nodded furiously, she turned to Max 'Daddy, can we go. Please say we can?' 'Of course we can darling'. Max was happy, he wanted to get to know this nice lady better, he extended his hand to Marnie 'I am Max by the way and this is Lissy.' Marnie held out her hand 'Marnie, a pleasure to meet you both. Now let's get this snow globe wrapped up for you.'

Max spoke once more, nervously this time. It had been a long time since he had chatted to someone as beautiful as Marnie. 'I was wondering...'

'Yes?'

'I was wondering if you would like to join Lissy and me for Christmas Day?' Marnie didn't say anything in reply. 'I mean, that is, if you are not doing anything?'

Marnie was shocked and felt her cheeks redden once more 'I would love to, as it happens it was going to be a meal for one' she laughed. This Christmas was going to be wonderful, she could just feel it.

Lissy jumped in happiness 'It's going to be a GREAT Christmas' She had already warmed to the kind lady owner of the Little Christmas Shop and she could tell her daddy had too.

Lissy held on tightly to her snow globe, as if her life depended on it, as they hurried home. That evening she put it in the window, lights all around it and played it, over and over until she went to bed. Yes, when she grew up she was going to be in the Nutcracker too. As Max tucked her into bed she looked out of her window into the night sky and whispered 'Thank you Santa!'

Merry Christmas

Santa's Grotto At Intu Lakeside Shopping Centre

For as long as I can remember we have been heading to Intu Lakeside for Christmas Shopping and when our son came along we continued to do so, shopping late into the evening whilst he slept in his buggy. As he got older we included a trip to see Santa as part of our trip and we have done this every year ever since.

He is 8 now and of course no Christmas would be complete without the obligatory visit to the Grotto ...  This year's Grotto is in conjunction with Playmobil toys.

We pre-booked out ticket and arrived at our allocated time.

The Grotto is just past the impressive Ice Skating Rink , next to the Christmas Market and Drinks Stalls.

Inside the Grotto, before you meet the big man himself, there are some activities to do to keep you occupied whilst you wait.

And finally, meeting Father Christmas himself...

Whereupon you are given a great gift/toy from Playmobil (my son chose a book) and have a chance to have your photo taken with the man himself

He had lots of fun, the whole experience is around 15 minutes which is just enough to keep the little ones entertained.

Have you visited Santa's Grotto yet?

Tickets cost £6, photos are extra. Head to the Intu Lakeside website to book your tickets.

*Our visit this year was complimentary

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream & Magic Eye Rescue Reviewed

I have had these sachet samples in my washbag for a while now and finally got around to trying them out this week...

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream 50ml £100

CT says

Intense Firming, Plumping Balm-Elixir

Feed your skin overnight with a live stem cell elixir made up of a powerhouse of 8 youth-boosting ingredients…doesn’t everyone want to wake up to the best skin of their life?

Let your skin drink from this radical “live” stem cell elixir, inspired by the conductive powers of live plasma. This powerful cream-elixir plumps, smooths and re-texturize your skin and, thanks to special time-release ingredients, works overnight to rebuild and renew it. Enriched with 8 de-ageing ingredients including winter Daphne stem cell extract & time-released retinol.

The Magic Recipe:
A Stem-Cell Elixir inspired by Plasma:

A magical water-in-oil cream-elixir that smoothes over and feeds the skin with an even distribution of ingredients. The active molecules are suspended within the texture so that the ingredients are slowly released into the skin. Inspired by the conductive physics of plasma, ensuring all molecules can pass evenly through the gel-like formula. Second Skin Red Algae Marigel binds to the surface like a second skin, minimising water loss and re-texturing the skin surface.

The Power of 8:

Charlotte has always been inspired by numerology and the special meaning of certain numbers. In Chinese prophecy, 8 is one of the most auspicious and positive numbers. Not only is it the sign for eternity, it also denotes prosperity. At the heart of this radical cream-elixir are 8 powerhouse ingredients, which aim to slow down the ticking time bomb of ageing.

1. Winter Daphne stem cells extract for more youthful-looking texture and firmer-feeling skin:

A radical, new natural stem cell extract. Winter Daphne improves the binding of skin cells to mimic the skin’s natural structure for a more youthful-looking, firmer-feeling complexion. Boosts micro-circulation to optimise cell-detoxification so skin is magically awakened and renewed. And it improves the supply of energy and nutrients to the new, young cells.

2. Time-released retinol molecules, a well known anti-age hero:

Our time-released Retinol has been enclosed in a structure of cyclodextrins which control the release and boost the efficacy of it within the skin. Hour by hour, Retinol is known to boost the rejuvenation process of skin cells, whilst also increasing the collagen content throughout the skin. The skin appears younger and more radiant.

3. Second-skin red algae Marigel, a strengthening and protecting barrier:

A live second skin that re-forms and re-creates baby-soft skin. The Marigel is rich in Red algae which is full of Calcium and Magnesium, which builds the strength and protective barrier of your skin.

4. Bionymph peptide:

The magical ingredient also found in Charlotte’s Magic Cream for the day. This genius anti-ageing ingredient is a unique, patented anti-ageing hero that multi-tasks in the skin, fighting the ageing process on all fronts. It increases collagen and fibre levels, prevents fibre break-down, fights free radicals and stimulates cell energy to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improve skin elasticity and smooth things over.

5. Olus Oil:

A botanical emollient rich oil with transglycerides to reduce water-loss. It also gives the cream-elixir its soft, velvety touch.

6. Frangipani:

As found in Charlotte’s famous day Magic Cream. Frangipani is a soothing and purifying ingredient.

7. Vitamin E:

Also found in Charlotte’s iconic day Magic Cream, is known to be a powerful anti-oxidant that instantly heals and reduces inflammation and scarring.

8. Caster Seed Oil:

Rich in fatty acids and highly emollient with super moisturising powers.

My thoughts

Apparently this product was four years in the making.

I hadn't read any of the reviews or even about the product before I popped it on at night. I was surprised at how thick, gloopy and sticky it was. As a result I am sure I over applied on the first night. It sat on my face, it was heavily scented floral. Completely not what I had expected. I woke up expecting some kind of miracle but I didn't really notice much except my skin felt soft.

Repeated the next night, used a bit less this time round. Same again  BUT I did notice that my skin felt nice and soft, my day skincare and makeup went on wonderfully smooth and the result was I DID look better and brighter than I had in a while, just not with ... Reading on the website the results that Charlotte Tilbury is claiming are after 8 weeks of use. Sadly I won't be able to test that out as I only have this small sample and I am not sure I am ready to shell out £100 to see!

Have you tried it?

My thoughts

Now this I can totally get on board with. An eye cream that really does work. Instantly I noticed the results and I am very tempted to pop this on my Christmas List. It is a gorgeous light fluid that smooths away the crepey skin directly under my eyes, and makes the eye area appear far more youthful than it normally suggests. My eyes are one of my biggest bugbears and this product gives me total confidence. The area is hydrated and wonderfully, wonderfully smooth.

Top marks from me. Blown away!

Bite Beauty Multistick Review

Bite Beauty say

A FORMULA FOR INNOVATION

18 universal colours that are blendable, breathable and buildable. Apply with a finger, a brush or a blender on eyes, lips and cheeks.

My thoughts

Versatile, a wonderful range of colours to pick and choose from and true to form these are actually perfect to use on eyes, lips and cheeks. I am usually not keen on multi products as if they are good on the cheeks they are too dry for the lips or if they are good for the lips they are too hard to blend on the cheeks! They apply matte but not flat. Creamy they set to a powder finish and are long lasting.

I was sent size shades from the collection and I do have my favourites - I love wearing Gelato a cool toned purple nude. For a pop of Autumn pink warmth I learn towards Macaroon which I pop on my eyes lips and cheeks, love, love love this shade. Cashew is a nice warm brown led shade which is easy to wear and is a throwback to the 90's early 2000....

Here are the swatches in order that they appear above

Blondie, Cashew, Cerise, Cocoa, Gelato & Macaroon

Finally, here I am wearing Gelato

Which are your faves?

Bite Beauty MultiSticks are available from Sephora.com at $24 each AND they now ship to the UK.

Prismologie Skincare Reviewed

What a real treat it has been trying out and experiencing luxury skincare brand Prismologie. Created to inspire people to embrace the mood enhancing powers of colours, through six distinctive colours chosen for their unique qualities. I know it enhanced my mood when this splash of colour arrived through my letterbox!

The six colours are - White for Clarity, Yellow for Confidence, Pink for Comfort, Green for Serenity, Red for Vigour and Indigo for Stillness. Diamonds, Citrines, Rose Quartz, Jades, Rubies and Sapphires are crushed into the formulations for their wellbeing properties. Working with leading Perfumers they created fragrances that unfold to complement the colours - Neroli for Clarity, Bergamot for Confidence, Rose for Comfort, Vetiver for Serenity, Cedarwood for Vigour and Oud for Stillness. The result is some really quite stunning scents for the products.

But do they work?

I was sent the above products to try out and below are my thoughts

Prismologie Jade & Vetiver Hand Exfoliant 75ml £35

Prismologie say - A creamy gel, enriched with moisturising oils, fine exfoliants, jade micro-crystals and the serene scent of vetiver to cleanse, restore and refine working hands.

My thoughts

This is a really gentle exfoliator that leaves hands feeling nourished (from the moisturising oils) super smooth and soft and beautifully cleansed. The scent is lovely and warming. Just gorgeous and a perfect base to apply your hand cream.

Prismologie Citrine and Bergamot Shower Gel 200ml £30 & Body Lotion £30

Prismologie say

Shower Gel - A foaming gel with brightening mineral and botanical extracts, citrine micro-crystals and the refreshing scent of Bergamot to leave you feeling thoroughly cleansed and good to glow.

Body Lotion - A silky lotion infused with botanical oils, citrine extract and Bergamot fragrance to hydrate and awaken skin for a thoroughly radiant you.

My thoughts

If you are looking for a bright and uplifting start to your morning then you will adore this sunny combination of Shower Gel and matching Body Lotion. The shower gel is just how you expect a shower gel to be and the Body Lotion is wonderfully light so it absorbs instantly leaving wonderfully soft skin. As ever the scent is fantastic, zesty but not overpowering.

Prismologie Hand and Cuticle Cream with Rose and Rose Quartz 75ml £30

Prismologie say  - A sensuous cream enriched with botanical extracts, Rose Quartz micro-crystals and Rose fragrance to soothe and moisturise stressed hands

My thoughts

I really like rose scented products but I am fussy, they cannot be that old lady rose scent that I think most people deplore, it has to be like a delicate flower. Happily for me this hand cream has a beautifully light and fresh rose scent that is just the perfect pick me up, it's more a like a hint of rose which I think will appeal to most people. The lotion is once again light but does the job of softening hands with just a small amount of product. 75ml will last you ages.

Prismologie Foot Cream with Oud and Sapphire 75ml £28

Prismologie say - A deeply moisturising cream with antioxidants, mood enhancing actives, Sapphire micro-crystals and Oud fragrance to help soothe your tired feet and leave skin soft and supple

My thoughts

This is my favourite product in the whole range. Quite frankly the best smelling footcare product I have ever used. Usually foot creams are fragranced with lavender which is not a scent that personally appeals to me much, this product pleasingly does not contain it, hurrah!

I apply this as I go to bed and it gets to work. Moisturising for truly soft feet and calming, relaxing my mind, aiding sleep with its warm and musky Oud scent. Sublime.

Skin Care for mind & body, I love it!

Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil Review

Skin radiance, it is what we all aspire to with our skincare routine but imagine if you could instantly cheat it with a product, but with regular use you can also achieve it everyday?

I absolutely love facial oils as part of my skincare routine and I was looking forward to trying out the new oil from Dermalogica - Phyto Replenish Oil.

Dermalogica say

This feather-light treatment oil rapidly absorbs to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier. Wear it alone or layered under foundation for all-day dewy skin.

Next generation formula takes a three-phase approach to replenishing protective lipids that are depleted by ageing and environmental stress. First, phytoactives from Camellia and Tamanu oils help restore the skin's natural barrier. Then, an essential lipid blend that includes Orchid Flower and Chia Seed Oil smoothes visible lines and locks in critical moisture. Finally, Sunflower, Rice Bran and Rosemary Extracts create a luminous antioxidant shield against free radical damage.

Ideal for daily use on normal to dry skin.

My thoughts

This sample arrived just at a time when my skin was really suffering post pregnancy. Inside my body was in turmoil and as a result this was reflected in my dull, lifeless skin on the outside. Although I would say my skin is normal/combination I was experiencing drier than usual skin due to post pregnancy hormones.

That said my skin has settled down now and I still use this as part of my daily regime and haven't noticed it looking any greasy so for me this oil has been and continues to be great.

The first thing to mention is the lovely, subtle scent that the oil has - this is important as you don't want a scent you dislike lingering on your face. Dewy, radiant, bright skin is something that I really covet (I always think that glowing skin makes you appear younger).

How to use - press 4-6 drops onto skin (there is a handy guide on how to apply) follow with moisturiser.

The result is instant radiance and healthy looking skin, even though it is an oil there is no oily/greasy residue and the product absorbs instantly into the skin. Skin feels soft and you are left with the perfect base for your makeup.

Final thought - does exactly as it promises. Impressive.

Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil 30ml costs £56.20. Visit www.dermalogica.co.uk for more details

Experience the next generation of concealer, exclusively developed by our expert makeup artist and founder, Annabel Jardella.

My thoughts

I never thought I would see the day when I would just use a touch of concealer instead of foundation but that day has come and I am happy to step away from the foundation for the purposes of this challenge...

Well I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. I apply ReCover on the red bits of my face (on my inner cheeks and the odd blemish evening everything out so brilliantly I have the perfect canvas for the makeup. The product works exactly like it promises. It is really fine and barely visible when blended. I like the cool touch applicator and you really only need a teeny, tiny amount for great coverage and concealment. A lovely natural face.

I pair the concealer with Max Factor Colour Intensifying Balm in Classy Cherry, this is a nice sheer and buildable lip product but can be applied without using a mirror. It can also be applied to the cheeks for a sheer pop of colour if needed. A real go to for me. For impactful, rich dark lashes I opt for Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara.

There you go, a quick made up look in less than five minutes using just three products.

ReCover Correct & Conceal Red costs £28 for 15ml and comes in six shades. I was sent shade Light.

Origins GinZing Energy Boosting Moisturizer Review

Origins say

This lightweight, oil-free, energising moisturiser instantly hydrates and revs up radiance. It's fortified with legendary skin-boosters like Panax Ginseng and Coffee Bean. Lackluster-looking skin is rapidly refreshed and revitalised to create a healthy, vibrant glow.

My thoughts

Now if you, like me, love the scent of freshly peeled, juicy oranges then you will absolutely adore the fragrance of the GinZing moisturiser. Zingy, bursting with zesty orange and completely uplighting, this is a real mood booster.

The actual moisturiser is an incredibly light, almost gel like liquid. It instantly absorbs, sinking in to reveal bright, glowing skin. I honestly cannot fault it. I only have a sample size but I am very tempted to make this my next moisturiser purchase.

Origins GinZing Energy Boosting Moisturizer 50ml costs £24

Dairy Free Drinks From Alpro

I was recently sent some Alpro dairy free products to try and I am excited to share my thoughts with you all...

As a household we have been buying Alpro Almond Milk (unsweetened) for quite a while now as my husband is dairy intolerant. I have liked that as an alternative to dairy in my cereal, it has a nice nutty taste. Last year I used it to make a Hot Chocolate and was hooked, I actually prefer it to using milk and now won't drink homemade hot chocolate any other way. Give it a try!

Alpro Oat Original - I have loved having this this week... first of all I just enjoyed it as a straight drink, it is wonderfully creamy and terribly delicious, a nice rich oaty flavour. A lovely smooth drink. As I ran out of milk I also tried it with my cereal and it was a taste sensation. I would seriously consider switching to this and going dairy free. I honestly had no idea dairy free could be so tasty.

Alpro Coconut Original - The straight tasting coconut milk drink is wonderfully refreshing. The small carton perfect for on the go. Also fantastic to add into a dairy free smoothie.

Alpro Coconut Chocolate - For a low calorie drink this is a real treat. It allows you to satisfy that chocolate craving (almost!) guilt free. If you love Bounty Chocolate Bars you will LOVE this, it is like drinking a liquid Bounty Bar, insanely good! Inspired.

JML Simply Straight Straightening Brush Review

I had seen a few adverts for straightening brushes and was curious to know whether they really worked... so when JML got in touch and asked me to review their brush, I had to say yes!

JML say

  • Combines the power of a straightener with the gentle styling of a brush
  • Ceramic coated bristles
  • Set the temperature to suit your hair type
  • LCD display
  • Auto shut-off safety feature
  • Straighten and style anywhere
  • No heat damage, no chemicals
  • Compact and great for travel
  • Temperature control from 150°C to 185°C

My thoughts

To give you a bit of background... my hair is long, thick and naturally wavy.

I have to be honest I wasn't expecting much from the straightening brush. I thought it would work best on naturally straight hair and I wasn't convinced it would work using a sub 200 degrees heat, but I was actually really impressed with how my hair turned out. I was hooked from the first use and haven't used my straighteners since.

Being a busy mum of two boys, one of which was just 5 months old when I started trialling this brush, my time is really precious. I don't have much time to get myself ready and when you have porous hair that takes ages to dry,  the styling section takes a bit of a back seat. Using straighteners takes time, time I just don't have.... However, using the Simply Straight Straightening Brush my hair is smoothed and styled beautifully. Frizz is eradicated and my hair looks good.

To use - Make sure you hair is dry and brushed through and then section and glide the brush along while holding hair taut. Simple! I find it much easier to use than my usual straightener, particularly working on the back of my hair.

I find it really easy to use and in just 10 minutes my hair, although not poker straight, is good to go. I really like it, no actually I love it.

See the results for yourself with my pics below.

My only niggle is that I wish the cord length was longer but other than that, it is a big thumbs up from me.

JML Simply Straight Straightening Brush costs £39.99 from the JML Direct website and other high street outlets.

Clinique Superbalanced Silk Makeup Foundation Review

It has been a while since I last write a foundation review but it doesn't mean I haven't been spending my time trialling them...

I love it when cosmetic companies include a little sachet sample in a magazine as it is a great way of trying before buying. Obviously,  it is inevitable,  that the one shade suits all colour they have selected to include isn't going to suit everyone but luckily for me, this one is perfect!

The shade is 08 Silk Canvas (MF-N)

The foundation - Clinique superbalanced silk makeup SPF15

Suitable for - dry combination to oily

Clinique say

Slip on a silk-enriched foundation. Feel naked, yet covered to perfection. Control oil, yet hydrate where needed. Protect with SPF. Oil-free. Sheer to moderate coverage. Natural-matte finish. Ideal for Dry Combination to Oily Skin Types.

My thoughts

It takes a lot to get me excited about a foundation and for me to rave about it. I have a checklist and it has to tick all the boxes. I have to say I really love this new foundation. Superbalanced silk is fantastic for my skin. Texture wise it is a runny foundation, it glides on like silk. Applies smoothly and seamlessly. It looks natural, blends well and despite it claiming to only be sheer/moderate coverage, I find it conceals everything I need it to, better than some foundations that claim to be full coverage. Like a silk veil, it fills in the dreaded pores on my nose, covers imperfections (specifically I have a brown dot on my nose and you cannot see it in the picture above. I think it makes my skin look flawless and bright. I feel really confident and happy wearing this foundation.

It lasts a good few hours too and keeps my blusher in place.

Love, love, love!

Clinique Superbalanced Silk Makeup costs £23 and is available in 20 shades.

By Invitation Michael Bublé Perfume Review

By Invitation is the brand new EDP by smooth, romantic crooner and rather easy on the eye, ladies favourite Michael Bublé..

Now I'd like to imagine that this perfume is how he would love his woman to smell... and it turns out I was right, this is exactly what he had in mind when he created this scent.

Michael Bublé says

"It's no secret that I'm a hopeless romantic. It’s in every note I sing and every song I write. The idea was to create a special ‘invitation’ to fans into my new world of fragrance. I’m inviting women to enjoy a beautiful scent that represents my personal taste and imagination. By Invitation is what I’d call ‘love in a bottle,’

Described as 'a glamorous floral oriental, encompassing the iconic flowers of love,’ By Invitation is an elegant fine fragrance that’s enlightened with a fresh fruity accent. Starting with tempting top notes of red fruits and bergamot with added heart notes of lily of the valley, wild jasmine and spicy inflections of peony, By Invitation wraps with a warm base of sandalwood-musk and addictive vanillas.

Top notes: Red fruits, Bergamot, Lemon

Heart notes: Lily of the Valley, Wild Jasmine, Peony, Rose

Base notes: Patchouli Indonesia, Cedar Wood, Vanilla and Praline, White Amber and Musk

My thoughts

With this fragrance I feel like I have been invited into Michael's inner world. A spritz of By Invitation is a statement. This is not, I feel, a fragrance for those who want an everyday easy to wear scent. This beautiful fragrance stands out and is noticeable. My husband noticed me wearing it when he came in from work three hours after I had first applied it. It oozes elegance and sophistication and dare I say, is quite sexy! It is sweet, warm and sparkling with the addition of its fruity notes. Actually going into Autumn/Winter this is quite a delicious scent.

I think it is timeless and classic fragrance and will definitely appeal to Michael Bublé fans.
By Invitation by Michael Bublé costs £55.00 for 100ml Eau de Parfum spray.

*Other available products in the collection include 50ml Eau de Parfum spray (£39.00), 30ml Eau de Parfum spray (£29.00), If you are a fan of layering there is also a Luxury Body Lotion (150ml £14.00) and Shower Gel (150ml £12.00).

The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask Review

The Body Shop says

Refine and revive your skin with our Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask. Inspired by Ayurvedic traditions, this 100% vegan tingling clay mask is infused with bamboo charcoal, green tea leaves and organic tea tree oil. And it’s been formulated without parabens, paraffin, silicone or mineral oil. This invigorating charcoal face mask draws out impurities and refines the appearance of pores for healthy-looking skin with a glow that shows.

  • 100% vegan
  • Tingling charcoal clay mask
  • Absorbs excess oil
  • For skin that needs extra purification to reveal a healthy, youthful glow
  • Formulated without parabens, paraffin, silicone or mineral oil
  • Ideal to create a facial at home
  • Packed with bamboo charcoal from the Himalayan Foothills, green tea leaves from Japan and organic Community Trade tea tree oil from Kenya

My thoughts

The mask sample was in a copy of Stylist Magazine. I don't remember whether the information accompanying the mask mentioned that it was tingling and to be honest I might have been a reluctant to try it. It's a good job I did though, as happily I didn't experience any tingling from my mask.

This mask is exquisite. It really works a treat and does what it claims. Its scent is gorgeously zesty and fresh. If you have smelt any green tea fragrances that is what it resembles. The mask is smooth with some bitty strips. It dries quickly, drawing out impurities and softening the skin. As you wash it off the bitty strips become an exfoliator, really cleansing and smoothing the skin. The result is glowing, bright skin and super cleaned out pores. Skin feels wonderful and beautifully soft to touch. A winning mask that I would head out and purchase.

Love it.

The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask costs £15 for 75ml

Monsoon Rose Gold Eau de Parfum Review

One of the unexpected benefits of writing fragrance reviews has been learning what kind of notes appeal to me and thus being able to spot which scents I will like based just on a description.

When the email about Monsoon Rose Gold hit my inbox I just knew it would be a perfume I would like and I wasn't wrong.

The bottle for Monsoon Rose Gold is extremely cute and pretty. The theme of Rose Gold is encompassed throughout. The shape of the bottle has that all important bathroom shelf appeal and is easy to hold.

The Perfume

Top notes:
Sparkling lemon, soft fruit and ozonic scents are layered with
Heart notes:
Velvety rose, tuberose, neroli and cyclamen
Base notes:
Eastern woods, vanilla, mosses, musk and balsamic amber.

My thoughts

As already mentioned, I knew I would like it if it contained rose and it didn't disappoint. In fact I love it! The perfume is a sparkling, deliciously sweet but not cloying scent that manages to be fresh and yet unashamedly feminine at the same time. In my opinion this is no mean feat. As it dries down it assumes a beautiful and comforting warmth.

It is extremely easy to wear, I have been wearing it every day since it arrived. It also wins points for being appealing to the other half!

The rose aspect is just gorgeous and there is not a hint of old granny rose in sight.

Monsoon Rose Gold Eau de Parfum 30ml costs £29
