Flash Fiction - The Loving Tree

Here is this week's 100 word story based on the following picture prompt

The Loving Tree

‘I love you Charlotte,’ Austin whispered as he held her tiny hand in his.
Charlotte beamed in delight. ‘Why don’t we carve our initials in the tree, as a symbol of our everlasting love?’
Austin pulled back in horror at the suggestion. ‘What? Why would we do that?’
Charlotte’s face crumpled in disappointment. ‘You don’t really love me, do you?’

Austin couldn’t believe what he was hearing, why would anyone want to harm a tree? Cutting its bark would allow a gateway for pathogens. He was quite disgusted in Charlotte. No, she was right, he couldn’t love her, not now.

Hope you enjoyed this story

  1. Dear Bettina,

That was certainly a unique take. Austin must be a scientist or a tree doctor. Sounds like Charlotte unwittingly spoiled the romantic moment. Nicely done.

    Shalom,

    1. Thanks for stopping by Rochelle! Poor Charlotte, it could be the end for their romance...

  2. I think Charlotte might be best to get out of that relationship now rather than later. Austin doesn't seem the loving kind.

  4. Now, he needs to try harder to please Charlotte( and make her love him) if he really loves her.
    Nice story, Bettina.

  6. Maybe Austin has read Roald Dahl's Sound Machine.
Good to find out early if you are incompatible.

  12. Boy, that was a short romance. I think he was more sensitive than the tree. Nicely done, Bettina. - Russell

  13. I'm with Austin, though graffiti is everywhere and has been for centuries. Thisk of the stonemason's initials on castle walls!
